Colour Shop Operative

Job Purpose: To safely and efficiently control and operate machinery, equipment and chemicals used in the process of producing reels of plain or coated paper to fulfil customer orders and quality requirements.
Main Accountabilities & Responsibilities:
Health Safety and Environment
- Work at all times in accordance with the Health, Safety and Environmental Standards associated with the role.
- Comply with existing standards, policies and procedures.
- Contribute to the development of operating procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work associated with the role.
- Undertake basic workplace and machinery safety inspections.
Quality
- Comply at all times with our product and process specifications, quality standards, and work instructions associated with the role.
- Diligently perform and record product quality assurance tests and assessments.
- Proactively identify & rectify quality issues, including internal and external customer complaint investigations where appropriate.
Service
- Maintain adherence to production plan/schedule.
- Proactively monitor and communicate risks to delivery of orders ‘on time in full’
Technical
- Deliver detailed operation, set up, adjustment and changeover machinery.
- Carry out fault-finding and basic care of machinery to maximise process throughput whilst also ensuring that process waste is minimised with quality being maximised.
- Conduct daily work area and machinery checks and inspections to drive reliability improvements.
- Key point of contact for our engineering team members to drive improvements in reliability, machine condition and performance.
- Work as part of a flexible and multi-skilled team providing cover for colleagues during absence periods.
- Train and assess the competence of work colleagues and assistant operators wherever possible.
Continuous Improvement
- Achieve and maintain high levels of workplace organisation.
- Contribute to projects and improvement initiatives across a range of areas including safety, quality, cost, service and workplace organisation.
- Take a proactive role in proposing continuous improvement suggestions.
- Ensure team based asset-care activities are carried out effectively.
- Maintain and improve area 5S standards through audits and activities
Team Work and Communication
- Effectively share information with colleagues in a clear and timely manner.
- Complete effective shift handovers with colleagues
- Complete and maintain any required shift operational performance records to support performance monitoring.

Person Specification:
Working in a fast paced and busy environment, the role holder must be very safety conscious, considering his/her own safety and the safety of colleagues at all times. The role holder must be well organised and capable of working carefully and methodically to meet defined service and production targets. Concerned with producing high quality outputs, the role holder will be meticulous in conducting operating and monitoring activities. Reliable, positive and self-managing, the role holder must be resourceful and demonstrate the ability to tackle and resolve problems as they arise. A good team player, the role holder must be able to demonstrate good technical skills, communication skills, flexibility, a willingness to learn and a focus on continuous improvement.

- Understanding of all relevant health and safety requirements

- Experienced in a fast paced manufacturing environment
Technical skills & abilities
Essential
- Basic Computer / IT Skills to operate business management & communication systems. Note – internal training given.
- Ability to utilise hand tools and operate a range of machinery
- Ability to operate a range of lift trucks and overhead cranes if required. Note – internal training given.
- Basic numeracy and literacy skills
- Manual Handling proficiency. Note internal training given

- Basic knowledge of continuous improvement techniques (Workplace organisation/5S, waste reduction & problem solving) Note internal training given

Additional Information
The role holder should be able to work flexibly within a 24/7 manufacturing environment operating a range of different shift patterns which may include nightshift and weekend working.
