Junior Scientist

Overview
The role holder should hold a degree or equivalent in a scientific discipline which they can apply in an industrial environment. This understanding and competence should be continuously developed with a proactive approach to training and development.
The Junior Scientist is expected to be organised, methodical self-disciplined and able to work with minimal supervision at times. They possess the ability to provide analytical, logical and creative approaches to problem solving whilst knowing when to seek advice of others.

Main accountabilities and responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Preparation of laboratory mixes, coating formulations, laminates and coated substrates
  •  Testing, characterisation of coatings, mixes, substrates, laminates and coated substrates
  • Compilation of test reports and data analysis to provide assistance in key developmental projects
  • COSHH assessment of new materials
  • Support the technical team in department activities
  • Maintain a clean, tidy and organised working environment
  • Support the achievement of the company vision
  • Excellent knowledge of key test protocols
  • Maintaining the quality documentation from the technical team
  • Assist in operational trials for new product introductions when required
  • Maintain accurate records for internal circulation
  • Promote good team working attitude within and outside the technical team

Key Requirements  

Essential 

  • 2 years previous laboratory experience preferably in a commercial environment
  • Enthusiasm and desire to work in a laboratory
  • Competent IT skills
  • Experienced in problem solving techniques
  • Good attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills particularly with those of a non-technical background
  • Competent at writing technical reports

Desirable

  • Understanding of polymers and pressure sensitive adhesive technology
  • Understanding of printing and conversion
  • Good understanding of laminates
  • Good background in formulation chemistry or coatings
  • Good understanding of material science
  • Good organisational skills and project management
  • Good data analysis skills
  • Good laboratory skills in both product preparation and testing
