Tullis Russell Celebrate the first National Employee Ownership Day!

31 Jul 2013

On Thursday the 4th July, Tullis Russell's Security and Speciality Coating division, along with many other Employee Owned Companies, celebrated the UK's first Employee Ownership day. Initiated by the Employee Ownership Association and backed by the Government and business professionals, Employee Ownership day was introduced in order for existing Employee Owners to highlight the benefits of Employee Ownership in the UK to entrepreneurs and business owners looking for a better way of working.

With strong ties to the local community, Tullis Russell decided there was no better way to celebrate the day than to invite one of the local schools, Dean Valley Community Primary School, to an open day at their site on Church Street in Bollington.

With Dean Valley's year 5 pupils currently working on a business enterprise project this provided them with the opportunity to not only understand more about the various departments within the business first hand (e.g. finance, sales, manufacturing) but to understand how an Employee Owned company differs from that of other types of companies.

During the open day, the children were taken on a tour of the facility to see the different processes and functions involved in the manufacture of security papers and films; from the lab where products are developed and tested, to the coating machines and parcelling machines where the products are finished and made ready for despatch.

The Year 5 pupils asked some very insightful questions and Mrs.Thorpe, Head Teacher at Dean Valley Primary School, commented 'The children have had a fantastic day; a very big thank you to all of the staff at Tullis Russell who were all very friendly and welcoming - Tullis Russell seems like a great place to work!'

As an activity following this event, the children were provided with some postage stamp paper and asked to design a stamp based around their experience at the mill. The winer will be announced in the macclesfield Express in the coming weeks.

Steve Hedar, Operations and Supply Chain Director at Tullis Russell said 'Our company has operated from the Bollington site for over 175 years and it was great to utilise this day to strengthen our connections with the local community and share the day with this group of children. It is great to see that employee ownership is being recognised at the highest level.'
